What is DIR Floortime?
DIR Floortime is an evidence based approach created by Dr. Stanley Greenspan with high success rates in improving relationships, emotional and language development in children with developmental delays and special needs. Floortime can be used with children of all ages, most commonly with children between 1 to 5 years old.
ABA vs Floortime?
In Floortime we follow the child’s natural interests and motivations while simultaneously working on language and behavior related goals such as following directions. Rather than use external rewards (stickers, stars, etc) as in ABA, we use the child’s natural interests to motivate them to interact, and develop relationships and communicate with adults and peers.
Floortime vs Speech Therapy?
While speech therapy works on specific goals related to speech and language, Floortime is a comprehensive therapy that includes emotional, cognitive and language development. Floortime therapy can be tailored to include speech therapy goals.
Who can be a Floortime therapist?
Speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists and special educations teachers can complete post-graduate training to become certified as DIR Floortime therapists.
